Summary: The news article focuses on the viral social media platform known as TikTok. The application has created an additional feature called "family pairing" that allows minors to scroll through TikTok under time restrictions. Family pairing or the well-being feature is an opportunity among parents and teens to detox methods from social media and develop online healthy habits. TikTok also provides guardians with the ability to filter out certain words and hashtags, set screen time limits, and set schedules to mute notifications. When teens reach their daily screen time limits, they must actively decide whether to extend their time on the screen by entering passcodes set by parents. It is claimed that this feature facilitates parental involvement, not parent control. Furthermore, the family pairing feature addresses the mental health struggles of teens, particularly girls with social media addiction, which has a significant impact on self-esteem.
Reactions: In my opinion, TikTok's new features blur the line between privacy and security. This is because internet users can easily access information. Meanwhile, it is also important to protect children from dangers that are inappropriate for their age group. The family pairing functionality, however, will work better with kids than teens. Since registration is required, under 18 users may be able to verify their account with a lie. For example, the year of birth, and how efficiently the app would recognized the truth of the user's biography? Nevertheless, the additional feature could benefit minors by helping them develop their management skills on using online social media for a limited period of time, as described in the statement "make an active decision".
Questions: Would it be better to use the same TikTok account with parents rather than turning on the family pairing feature on a teen's personal account? What are your thoughts regarding the security of the user's information and the increase in efficiency of the system?

DIPBM 102: Explored through the media - Bias

This is a very interesting in topic, I agree with you on the point that users can lie about their true age anyway. But It dose help some parents to be involved rather than to be controlling parents, to be aware of their child's social media behaviors.
ReplyDeleteHowever, teenage users can have privacy in using their social media platforms.
Great work, easily read summary.
I agree with you because this family pairing functionality will prevent children from social dangers. Plus, parents could be more aware of what their children are informing themselves. Indeed, it benefits both sides (parents and the kids). However, we should not invade children's privacy; let them be free on social media platforms.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice of topic and well written 🥰
